Differences: an Observation

You were told to learn your times tables
I am asked how I would like to learn them

You were forced to work the farm
I am asked, and decide not to

You were taught to respect and never question
I am taught to respect, but always question

You did what you were told
I find something easier to do

You were scared of the frontline
I am scared of the dark

You wrote letters with months to wait
I update Facebook every ten minutes

You battled with dysentery, death and the possibility of defeat
I battle with depression

You got your left lower leg blown off
I got my nose pierced

You defended King and Country
I take self-defence lessons

You went to church with your parents
I go to my gay friend's wedding

You fought for Honour
I fight for freedom of expression

You were never given a choice.

I am given choices every day,
And still I can’t choose.
