a tribute

one night a little while ago
my little cat did not come home
a night is a long time, you see
for this little one who belonged to me

next day a neighbour kindly rang
and said my chap had had a bang
he was at Newtown SPCA
I left work and went right away

in an incubator he lay there
his little face confusion and fear
he was on a lot of drugs
and he needed very gentle hugs

the vet opened the door and I started to cry
she said "I'm very sorry; poor little guy"
I didn't want to ask but I had to:
"Is there anything you think you can do?"

"I don't know if there is," she said
and then I had to hang my head
my little Bean was a part of me
without him I wouldn't be happy

we took him to our Wadestown vet
through rush hour traffic we tried to get
the vets had sad looks on their faces
they didn't think that they could save him

about four weeks later he came home
the vets said "Who would have known?"
he was called a miracle cat
to be able to come back like that

now with a wobble he walks around
but very happily we have found
that he is still the same old Bean
now just more special with a bit of a lean

so if you love your pets like me
I hope you liked my wee story
and know that without the SPCA
we would not have him home today

they look after those who cannot speak
but who have hearts, and feelings deep
they do not speak but they do know
that some good people love them so
