Day Four - Six

Day Four: Opotiki to Whitianga
  • coffee in Whakatane
  • curry in Tauranga for lunch
  • catching up with Kelly and meeting Toby
  • there was a cat clled Lucy asleep in our room upon arrival at the Cat's Pyjamas backpackers in Whitianga
  • fish and chips which we waited about 45 minutes for because they were so busy
Day Five: Whitianga to Russell
  • fruit for breakfast
  • took windy Russell Road to Russell, then on car ferry
  • stayed at fancy B&B Te Manaaki (our flashest place this holiday)
  • had harbourside dinner at Sally's... yum. Bottle of wine, perfect chicken breast and yuuuuuuuuuum chocolate fondant for dessert (yum sunshine too). Watched fancy people in their boats and

  • saw a guy around our age driving a hot-ass yellow Ferrari F1 330 which was both inspiring and annoying
Day Six: Russell - Waitangi - Kerikeri - Rawene
    • home-made plunger coffee by my lovely husband while still in bed
    • waterfront berry waffles for breakfast
    • car ferry to Paihia - a first for me and quite choice

    • Waitangi treaty grounds visit.

    • watch a tui in a pohutukawa tree singing at Waitangi (ultimate Kiwi experience?)
    • watching teenagers jumping off a cliff-hanging tree into an inlet (looked quite fun)

    • Makana chocolate factory visit (Kerikeri) - recommended by Sarah Thompson. We bought dark choc dipped cherries and butter macadamia toffee crunch
    • lunch from the supermarket overlooking a wedding marquee being set up for the afternoon
next is a couple of days exploring the Hokianga
