Dammit my post just got wiped by Mozilla Firefox shutting down

Story 1

On the 30th of January, Stuff reported the story of the girl who auctioned off her virginity. In short, a 19-year old thought: "what better way to pay for my university fees than to auction off the virginity of a much sought-after, attractive 19 year old - moi?" So she put an ad on ineed.co.nz [ineed a virgin?] and the highest bidder bid FORTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

There is just so much I could talk about here.

First of all, the article linked to above mentions a Waikato Times reader, Mrs Erceg, who writes:

"I just want to make everyone aware that they shouldn't use a website that mixes clean trading with sick people who want to sell themselves for sex. If they want to sell their sex for money they should look for a job in a brothel."

I don't really understand you, Mrs Erceg. 'Selling yourself for sex' is legal in this country, so how is this different to a university student offering their services as a high-school or undergrad tutor? I think that said 19 year old is a GENIUS.

The next point of interest is that I searched for this story on the internet last night and found it reported on the Hindustan Times website, which as far as I can tell is an Indian Newspaper put out be HT Media in New Delhi.

The comments were fascinating (which, incidentally, I can't seem to locate at the moment). They really highlight a difference between our general beliefs here in NZ and those in India. There was one comment which really stood out to me; something along the lines of - "A young woman's virginity is much more important than education." At first I scoffed, but then I realised that actually, in that part of the world maybe it is. There were also comments along the lines of "what a sick pack of bastards those New Zealanders must be". There were also comments though, that said, "unfortunately that is what some women feel they need to do", and "why not? Good on her!"

I also found it on Toronto's The Globe and Mail website, where at the time of my viewing, it was the site's Most Viewed story.

Like I said, I could go on forever. I just think it was a good idea and she did a great job. She said it was much more than she thought she would get. Some more interesting things to think about:
  • what kind of person is the highest bidder? A pimp? A rich business woman who saw a young girl in potential trouble? A lonely lesbian? A sugar daddy? (Who knows, she might end up with some kind of relationship out of this?)
  • what implications does this have for the future? Will more girls do this? Will it become passe, therefore lowering the highest bid obtainable?
  • what does the government think? Are they concerned that young people are considering selling themselves as an alternative to paying off a student loan?
Story 2

The Pope is being an egg.

"[Britian is imposing] unjust limitations on the freedom of religious communities to act in accordance with their belief."

He is talking about Britian's reform of human rights and equality legislation ("The new laws would finally remove the ability of religious organisations and schools to use religious freedom arguments to stymie the hiring of gay men and women."). He is upset, basically, that the Catholic Church now has no legal argument to refuse hiring a homosexual.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. I'm just irked. I mean seriously, if you love God and God loves you, does it matter if you're gay? Why do religious people sometimes feel the need to tell atheists "God loves you", but oh no, those loyally religious homosexuals, he doesn't love them.

Also, I don't really see why Catholic people should have an excuse to not hire a gay person. If they do, why? It doesn't make sense for Joe Employer (hypothetically) to decide, oh, I don't like Asian people, so I'm not going to include any of them on my shortlist for this job. Joe doesn't have a legal excuse to do this. So why should Joe have a legal excuse to do this, if he's Catholic and doesn't want a gay person in his religious bookshop?

Story 3 - and on a lighter note...

This guy is just a dork. See the video for yourself here.

What a knob.

I've decided that whenever I blog, I will end the blog with my favourite thing from the Internet on that day (since I spend so much time on it). Here's today's:

There was a controversy here awhile back because a girl auctioned off her virginity too...in Nevada, I think, which is the only state where prostitution is legal. I've heard of women selling their eggs because apparently you can get a lot of money for those too...
