Poppy Day 2010

I don't know how you felt
or the methods you used
to cope

I don't know who you fought
or the machines you used
to do so

I don't know who your friends were
or the things you did
to pass the time

I don't know what you spoke of
if you confided in anyone
your fears

but I do know I'm sad
for the conversations
we never had

and the stories I'll
never hear

and I'm sad
that our generation can not
claim to be
as brave as you

even though
I don't know
how you felt
or who you fought
or who your friends were
or what you spoke of,
I do know
that I am proud
to be your granddaughter

Today I decided (perhaps a bit too late) that I am going to start a Poppy collection. Hmm... maybe that's wrong, because aren't you supposed to lay them on the cenotaph in remembrance? But I thought it would be neat to keep one from each year, and write on the back where I got it from and the year. Then when I'm old I can look at them all and remember where I was each year, and remember what they stand for.

This year's says
