Today we docked in Ketchikan, Alaska (along with Norwegian Sun, Holland America Amsterdam and Celebrity X Millennium). Apparently even though Ketchikan (population ~8100) is one of the warmer cities in Alaska with average highs in summer of 15 degrees Celsius, it also rains a lot. They call it liquid sunshine. But it didn't raining us today - in fact that sun shone for a good part of the day which made us happy.
We docked quite late at about 11am and our zip lining tour was booked for 12pm, so we went ashore earlier up have a look around. For our tour we took a coach about 20 minutes out of town to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary at Tongass National Park. After getting up the hill on a red unimog (which was very fun in itself) we got kitted out with harnesses, hard hats and gloves. The zip lining was a series of 6 lines with tree platforms in between which you 'zip' along like a flying fox (but in a harness). There was also a suspension bridge (which I really didn't enjoy), a 'repel' (controlled vertical fall) and a mountain slide which you go down in a burlap sack). The guides were entertaining and it was one if their birthdays so he was quite excited. After we took the coach back into town we got drinks and free wifi at a bar. We had a very late lunch (4.30pm) at O'Brien's Irish Pub - I had salmon and chips (yum). We did done souvenir shopping on the way back to the ship. We bought a sea otter and moose pyjama pants. I love them!
The zip lining was fun but I don't think I'd feel the need to do it again. We are waiting on washing now - so good to have self-service laundry unlike on NCL.
Victoria is our next port of call after a day at sea tomorrow.
