However, Bean is getting better every day. On Friday (the day we took him to the vet from the SPCA) and on Saturday, we were very worried, spontaneously breaking into tears (well me anyway) every now and then and just futilely trying to imagine our lives without him. The vets have now admitted to us that they didn't think he was going to make it, that they would have to put him down.
Anyway, he is getting better every day so far. He has feeling in both his legs, and maybe his tail (they don't know whether they'll have to remove it or not), but they are yet to do any surgery as they need to determine whether he needs it on both femurs or just one.
We visit him daily. He may be able to come home for the weekend, then we will take him back next week for surgery.
At this point I'd like to say a really big thanks to the staff at the Newtown SPCA, the Wadestown vet clinic (they treat him is if he was their own), and all the family, friends, neighbours and people on Facebook who have sent their love.
I took this pic this morning when we visited. He has been so lovely and purring loudly, cuddling, kissing and trying to climb up into my lap. I said to him this morning "I don't mind your claws digging into my thigh Bean, the pierce marks remind me of you".

I am so sorry about Bean. So glad he's doing better. Give him a big kiss for me!
He's looking soooo good. Long may it continue.
