They say that
God created the Universe
but I don't believe that.
So who do I thank?

for your eyes
that sparkle so
brightly and
full of love

for the way
a little girl's laugh
lights her
father's eyes

for the young love
that threatens
to swallow
me whole

who do I thank
for the clear sky
and night stars
that glisten so

who do I thank
for the running water
so free and clean
underneath my feet here

for the patterns
that shine on
your coat
and your love

for your smile
or laugh on the phone
for knowing
I am a part of you

and who do I thank
for the generations
to come, who
have our problems to bear

who do I thank
for the millions
dying and hungry
unfairly diseased

for the tsunamis
and earthquakes
for malaria
AIDS and terrorism

who do I thank
for the mother
who holds the hand
of her dying newborn

for the need for the
children's cancer ward
for the serial rapist,
still on the run

who do I thank for
the woman who
finds her husband
hanging

for fatal accidents
suicide bombers
who do I thank for
brave but dying soldiers

who can I thank

for all of this

in the same breath?
