holiday posting time!

So I'm back at work today. I wrote in our travel journal while we were away, so I thought I'd post blogs from the journal to tell you what else we got up to :) I might add some stuff in depending on what my memories offer! I will also post some photos at some point, once I get them onto my computer.

Sunday 9th May

Last night we arrived in Miami from Austin, Got to our hotel in South Beach Miami at about 10.30pm via taxi. We hadn't had dinner so we hopped over the road and had a small meal to share. It's pretty hot here, around the same as Austin actually, but more humid! So is very sticky. The pictures you see on TV of people all walking around in bikinis etc actually make a lot more sense - wearing clothes, you just get all sticky and uncomfortable. Nevertheless, fellow citizens, I did not bare all, do not fear. After the meal we shared a massive margarita and too soon afterward order a mojito. My stomach totally did not agree so I had to leave and come back to the room :( Adrian took care of the bill and then came back over.

Anyway today was our Everglades tour. We booked it just yesterday while we still had internet in Austin. Until then we hadn't decided what to do with our free day in Miami, but thought visiting the Everglades would be good. I'm glad we did it. It was very cool, and well worth the US$46 we paid each. We were picked up from our hotel and had a semi-commentary on the way to the Everglades. It's only about 40 minutes away from the beach so it's pretty close. We we got there (to "Gator Park") we had to wait a little while before going on a 45 minute air boat ride. We went through a slow part and saw some small gators, turtles, fish and birds. A cute nest of baby green back herons! Then went for a faster ride a bit further in.

When we got back from that we went to their wildlife show. It was very cool too - there was a scorpion, alligators (big, baby and medium), skunks, a toad and more. At the end we got to hold a 4-foot alligator and get a photo with it :) The guy said "Don't worry ladies, he feels just like a handbag!" Hah, sad but true.

When we got back to the hotel it was about 2.30pm. We had lunch, nothing special, had a peek at the beach, but it was pretty hot by then. Couldn't help but think of my sister Anna, she would love it so much there. Later we heard that today was a record high of 94 degF (34.5 degC) - previous record was in 1967 and was 93 degF.

After that we rode a bus around for a while then got off to look at some shops. We had a really nice dinner at Jerry's Famous Deli. We were beginning to think that eating places in Miami were kind of crap but Jerry's was great. And our waitress was really nice. [We actually went back the next morning for breakfast before we had to leave Miami]

Tomorrow we check out of here and board our cruise ship for the Bahamas :)

So I figured I'd keep blogging from the journal and add photos in when I can.

Love xxx
