New (old) poem + News In Brief

Wow, it's been a while. It appears this blog is now used only for travel and poems. Since my poetry writing has taken a downturn lately, and we aren't exactly going on holiday every week, it's a little bit empty!

News In Brief:
  • Adrian and I have been looking at open homes with an agenda to see what is available for the money we will have. We *might* look at buying near the end of this year, depending on the houses available. Considering we apparently live in one of the most unaffordable places in the world, I will be extra proud if this actually happens. (http://www.demographia.com/dhi.pdf see page 18).
  • Claire's Pet Care has obtained a few more clients and was very busy over Christmas
  • We are counting down to our next holiday in May/June (see countdown timer to your right ----->): Europe including Baltic Cruise, visiting family and friends in England and the Netherlands, a not-originally-planned 5 day mini holiday in Copenhagen, and plans for a mini road trip around the south of England.
I wrote Adrian a poem for Christmas. It was inspired by a concealed, dark desire of his to be an accountant or some kind of finance-y person. Those of you who know him will know he gets rather passionate (some might say geeky) about some things. Finance/loans/interest/savings/currency markets is one of these things. So here it is:

There once was a Doctor
who worked hard all day,
But he wasn't a Doctor
in the usual way.

Not a Doctor who jabbed
or prodded or poked,
Not even a Doctor
in a white lab coat.

He sat and he tapped
at computers all day
No, he wasn't a Doctor
in the usual way.

His work was intriguing
and paid him well,
but what was missing?
...He couldn't quite tell.

He sighed and he hummed
and he tapped and he typed
and thought about what
he could do in the night

"Could I be a Dancer,
an Actor or Cook?
Should I be a Barman,
or start writing books?"

"That's it!" He thought,
"I'm a Doctor all day..."
[But remember, not a Doctor
in the usual way.]

"But oh! I'll be a
Secret Hero in the night -
I'll sneak around
balancing books left and right!"

He went out and bought
a cape, green and blue;
new glasses (dark ones)
and a new pair of shoes.

Armed with a calculator,
rulers and pens,
he readied himself and
started out then:

"I may be a Doctor
all through the day,
But I am not a Doctor
in the usual way.

Look out in the night!
I'll come to your bars,
Your shops and your cafes
and even your spas!

I'll look through your books
and balance your year.
After I'm gone,
No tax-men you'll fear!

Super Accountant Man!
I'm a Doctor by day,
But no longer a Doctor
in any usual way!"

I love the poem! How about Adrian does our taxes? That would be awesome. Good luck house hunting, that is so exciting!
