May 21 - Copenhagen day 3
May 21
We slept in - yay! After a supermarket breakfast (so much more interesting when the supermarket is foreign) we walked to Rosenborg Palace which is not far from our hotel. This was my favourite palace/castle visit in Copenhagen. The rooms are arranged in roughly chronological order, themed on the king of that time and deliberately set up to represent what the room would have looked like at the time (it was the residence of the royal family up until 18-something when they moved to Amalienborg). Highlights were the Mirror Cabinet (made for Frederik IV, a room of mirrors - seems like a modern idea but evidently was quite common http://dkks.dk/spejlkabinettet-en), the beautiful wooden cabinets and furniture, the Metrology room (with Denmark's first weights and measures standards - funny how this is not really interesting until you're a metrologist!), funny paintings of kings on horses, thrones made entirely of silver (queen) and narwhal tusk (king). The Palace also houses the Royal Treasury, which alone would have been worth the visit. The crown jewels, royal coronation sceptres, swords and rapiers, along with hundreds of beautiful precious jewels in jewellery (the emerald tiara was my favourite). We arrived right on opening time, so we managed to finish just as it began to get very overcrowded with tourists. / After the Palace we found a cute cafe over the road which reminded me of a Wellington cafe. Had a coffee (which isn't a trivial thing - my mocha cost around NZ$9!) which was nice. We have been slowing down a bit because we had seen so much on day 1 and 2 and didn't need to rush. "Stopping to smell the roses", I guess :) / From a bus ride we found ourselves at a huge department store called Magasin du Nord, and had a good wander around as well as lunch at the food court on the top floor. / In the evening we took the Metro to Fredericksberg. We though we were going to a castle and even though it would be closed we could see the park and the outside. But it turns out we were thinking of FredericksbOrg which is somewhere north! Funny. However, there WAS a palace and a beautiful, huge park (with more sunbathers and picnickers), which reminded us a lot of Sanssouci in Berlin. /Supermarket tea consisted of really really smelly and inedible cheese, roast pork, raspberries, yoghurt, chocolate scones and pick n mix lollies.
